Kicking Horse Canyon Pass Bridge

High in the rugged Rocky Mountains of British Columbia, this unique 400 meter long bridge was built in the Kicking Horse Pass – 90 meters above the canyon floor. It features six spans ranging from 50 to 80 meters in length. The bridge deck itself is over 23 meters wide and designed to accommodate two lanes of traffic in each direction. The superstructure consists of four main steel girders and three substringers supported on intermediate cross-frames.

The horizontally-curved steel plate girder superstructure was erected with incremental launching. It is believed to be the largest of its type in North America built using this method. The automated launch system for the project was custom designed, built and operated.

Features included a launch system using four 60T launching arms with 2m stroke, flange and wedge clamps, guide systems at piers and “nose girders.”
