The Coast Meridian Overpass (CMO) linking north and south Port Coquitlam is a 580-metre long, 24-metre wide cable-stayed bridge crossing 60 tracks of the Canadian Pacific rail yard and four lanes of traffic on the Lougheed Highway.
The elevated structure is a four-span bridge which was push-launched for clear spans of up to 125 meters with no intermediate supports – the longest in North American history. Push-launch refers to a system whereby the structure was assembled on a roller launch-pad at one end and then pushed out over the rail yard with hydraulic jacks. Over 4,500 tonnes of steel were used to build the complete span. Cables attached in a fan design (vertically attached) to the four 25-metre tall steel pylons support the entire deck.
The primary challenges on this project included working with very limited ground access or disruption to the CP Rail operations, engineering a push-launch system that would allow a maximum cantilevered span of 125 meters while still maintaining an efficient and economical design for the permanent structure, and an extremely tight time schedule for design and erection.
Since opening on March 7, 2010 the CMO has become a critical transportation link providing traffic relief, improved access and more reliable emergency response times. The bridge offers four traffic lanes, two sidewalks, one bicycle lane and acoustic fences.
